On Sunday, September 22nd, we headed to the East Village for a thrift day! After everyone arrived, we walked over to our first store of the day, East Village Thrift Shop, which is a great place to score a bargain on everyday basics, such as T-shirts and jeans. They also have an awesome selection of dresses! Our next location was Buffalo Exchange, but on the way, we passed through a Dragon Fest street fair. It was really cool to check out what they had to offer, from multicolored dumplings to flavored lemonade! This spontaneous stop really goes to show that you’ll never know what surprises you’ll encounter in NYC!
Once we had some snacks for the road, we went to Buffalo Exchange and 2nd Street, which are located right next door to each other! Both of these stores have amazing statement pieces if you’re looking to add something new to your closet. We also spotted some secondhand Halloween costumes in stock, which sparked a conversation about the waste created by the holiday, and also about the potentially harmful materials that are used in a lot of clothing, especially costumes. With Halloween coming up soon, looking at secondhand or DIY costume options can be a great way to celebrate the holiday while reducing the negative impact that it has on the environment!
After snagging some cool shirts and accessories at the thrift stores, we began making our way towards our final stop of the day: Supermoon Bakehouse! But on our way there, we saw a sample sale, so we decided to pop in. While we didn’t end up purchasing anything, it was really interesting to get a look at a totally different side of the fashion industry, and it put the day’s thrift experience into perspective. We also stopped at Economy Candy, which is an NYC classic! Although this doesn’t connect to thrifting at all, we felt that we had to stop by while we were in the neighborhood, and we all had a great time sharing our food-centered memories with each other.
We finally made it to Supermoon Bakehouse, which has a menu full of creative pastries such as a rose eclair and a Ferrero Rocher cruffin, in addition to gelato! We all tried their Twizzler, lychee, and rose flavor. As we enjoyed it, we discussed the merits of thrifting. Despite the fact that we all had very different senses of style (which was evident in our outfit choices), we all agreed that one of the best parts about thrifting is that there are plenty of unique pieces that allow us to express ourselves!
